Just last month, US President Donald Trump launched his smartphone and gave the slogan " Make America Great Again. His company's first phone, the Trump T1, was claimed to be a Made in USA phone. This information was given on the phone's website itself, but now it has been removed, so the question arises whether the phone of Trump's company, which gives the slogan of Made in America, is also not Made in America? Let's understand...
Trump Mobile, a wireless service and phone company launched by the Trump Organization, is no longer claiming on its website that its upcoming smartphone T1 8002 is made in America. According to the Internet Archive, the company changed the language on its website around June 22, and in place of "Made in USA", it is now written that this phone is "designed with American values." Earlier, the claim that the phone is made in America was present in the archived version of the website till June 18, and the screenshot taken by CNN. The change was first reported by The Verge.
Experts had raised doubts.
Tech industry analysts had already questioned the phone's "US production", saying the T1 8002's specifications were very similar to those of a phone made by a Chinese manufacturer. Despite this, a Trump Mobile spokesperson told CNN that "T1 phones are proudly made in the US." He said all speculation to the contrary was false and misleading.
Contradictions in statements
The company's previous press release still states that the gold-coloured phone, priced at $499, is being "proudly designed and manufactured in the US." During the announcement at Trump Tower on June 16, Trump Mobile partner Pat O'Brien said, "We will make the phone in the US." However, in another interview, Eric Trump said that "eventually all phones may be made in the US," adding more ambiguity to the claim.
‘Design’ vs. ‘Manufacture’
Ryan Reith, vice president of International Data Corporation, said terms like “design” and “manufactured” are too vague. For example, Apple designs its iPhones in California, but assembles them with international components in China or India. Trump Mobile’s website still says the phone is “brought to life here in the US,” but that doesn’t mean where the manufacturing took place. “No smartphone is made entirely in the US from start to finish,” Reith said.
Changes in phone specifications, too
According to Trump Mobile’s website, the screen size of the T1 8002 has also been changed. Earlier, it was stated to be 6.78 inches, which has now been reduced to 6.25 inches. Not only this, but the information about the phone’s memory space, which plays an important role in the performance of apps and multitasking, is also not available on the website.
Does the design match the Chinese phone?
Purism CEO Todd Weaver and Creative Strategic analyst Max Weinbach told CNN that the initial design of the T1 phone matches the Revvl 7 Pro 5G made by a Chinese company called Wingtech, which costs $169 and is available on Amazon.
