If you are also worried that the internet is required to send messages on WhatsApp or any other messaging app, then there is good news for you. Now, such an instant messaging app has been launched that will work even without the internet. Now it was launched by none other than Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. Let's know about it in detail...

Twitter (now X) co-founder Jack Dorsey has launched a unique and revolutionary messaging app called Bitchat. The most special thing about this app is that it does not require the internet to use it. This app is capable of sending and receiving messages via Bluetooth technology.

While popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram are based on the Internet, Bitchat also runs without Wi-Fi or mobile data. This app is decentralized, that is, it has no central server, just like Dorsey's Twitter rival, Bluesky.

How does Bitchat work?

Bitchat is based on a Bluetooth mesh network. This technology works on a peer-to-peer connection like torrents, in which nearby devices are connected and messages are delivered from one device to another in encrypted form.

In this network, every device acts as a node and helps in forwarding messages. As users move from one place to another, they keep connecting and disconnecting from local Bluetooth clusters, and in this process, messages are passed from one device to another. According to Dorsey, even though the range of Bluetooth is about 100 meters, Bitchat can deliver messages up to 300 meters.

Security and Privacy
All messages sent in Bitchat are end-to-end encrypted, that is, only the sender and receiver can read them. Apart from this, the messages are not stored on any server, but are saved on the device itself and disappear automatically by default. Dorsey also said that WiFi Direct support will be added in the future, which will further improve the speed and range of the app.

Group Chats and Rooms

Group chats in Bitchat are called "Rooms", which start with a hashtag (#) and are password protected. If a user is offline, messages can also be stored and forwarded to them, meaning they can see them as soon as he is online again.

The biggest thing is that there is no need to sign up with a phone number or email to use this app. It runs completely on a peer-to-peer network, where every device plays the role of both client and server.

Availability of Bitchat

Currently, Bitchat is available only for Apple users through TestFlight, and its limit of 10,000 users has already been completed. According to Dorsey, this app may soon be available in the Apple App Store.

As per the information provided on GitHub for Android, it is platform agnostic (not limited to any particular platform) and can be developed on any platform using Bluetooth LE APIs, similar packet structure and encryption methods.
