As the full moon of Guru Purnima rises, a day dedicated to honouring the guiding forces in our lives, many find themselves wondering: how does one find a true Guru? In this insightful column, Sadhguru – a spiritual guru, global mystic and visionary, dismantles our usual notions of finding a Guru and reveals a deeper path, one rooted not in choice but in longing.
Sadhguru: Don’t try to find a Guru because if you choose one, what kind of Guru would you choose? The kind that you are comfortable with, the kind that you like. Please look at how you like something and how you dislike something. Anything that supports your ego, you like it. Anything that disturbs your ego. You don’t like it. If you make friends, what kind of friends do you make? Somebody who reinforces your ego. If somebody punctures your ego on a daily basis, he becomes your enemy. So if a Guru reinforces your ego, he will be no good Guru for you.
A Guru is a special kind of friend who punctures your ego on a daily basis, who will leave you with a flat tyre every day. So don’t choose your guru; just intensify your longing. You just make your longing very deep. So deep that every cell in your body should scream, “I want to know.” He will find you. He is constantly scanning the world and seeing where is that longing. It is hard to find, you know?
So when you say I have seen many Gurus, you might have seen people, but you have not seen any Guru. Now if you have seen me, this does not mean I am your Guru. Because if you are only listening to my words and you like lifit, and I seem to be making little more sense than you would make yourself, that is not a Guru. Till you are completely overwhelmed by his presence which is totally illogical, and everything in you says, “Let’s run from here,” but you will never run; that means you found your Guru.
Your logic says, “Let’s get away from here.” You don’t like it, but you cannot leave. If you sit with him, you feel very threatened. You want to run away, but everything in you wants to be there somehow. When you get to that situation, you have found your Guru. Till then it is ok; you be with him because you like the logic, you like the food or you like whatever. That is fine, but don’t assume that you found your Guru or that you have to search for one. Don’t ever search for one. Just intensify your longing in such a way that every cell in your body is screaming and wanting to know. It will happen.
