Why are thousand eyes on Indra's body?

In the old stories and Puranas, there is a mention of Indra's living in heaven. It is said that Indra resides there with thousands of nymphs. By the way, Indra is a verse provided to the king of the gods. Indra is mostly shown to indulge in bhog luxury. There is a story related to this, which we get to mention in Brahmavaivarta Purana and Padmapurana.

According to Padmapuran, thousands of eyes appearing on Indra's body were due to the curse of Gautam Rishi, but it was not the first eyes, not thousands of vagrants which later turned into the eyes. Let us know what is the story behind it.

The legend behind it

This mythology is mentioned in both Brahmavaivarta Purana and Padmapurana. It is said that Ahilya was the wife of Gautam Rishi and she had the boon of being chiriyavana. There was no answer to her beauty. Once Indra was out to travel on earth, when he saw a beautiful woman outside a sage's hut and was fascinated on seeing, later he came to know that she is the wife of Gautam Rishi but still Indra, Devi became enamored towards Ahilya. For this, he made a plan, with the help of the moon, he created an atmosphere as if it was morning. The Moon made a cock and banged it. Gautam Rishi used to leave for worship in the morning. Hearing the chicken bang, he felt it in the morning and he left for a place towards the river, as soon as Gautam Rishi went out of his hut, Indradev, who disguised Gautam Rishi, invited Goddess Ahilya to pray.

Gautam Rishi cursed

During this time, Gautam Rishi felt on the river that the night is still left, it seems that there is some confusion, he came back towards the hut. When he found Ahilya and Indra together, he cursed Goddess Ahilya that you become this stone. After that Gautam sage understood that it was Indra's trick, he also cursed Indra that for which you have become so corrupt, thousands of vagrants should appear on your body.

Indra did penance of Sun God

After this, Indra apologized to Gautam Rishi but he did not get forgiveness. Later, Indradev did penance to the Sun God and asked for a diagnosis of this curse. Surya Dev said that I cannot avoid the curse of Gautam Rishi, but I can definitely turn these vagrants in your eyes. Since then Indra's body vagra was turned into the eyes.

Later gave a boon to Goddess Ahilya

At the same time, Gautam Rishi understood that there was no fault of Goddess Ahilya in all this but he could not withdraw his curse, so he gave a boon to Goddess Ahilya that Lord Vishnu himself would come to save her and later Shri Rama made her cursed by making her a goddess with a stone.
