New Delhi: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated No. 10 Ben Shelton 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4 in the Wimbledon men’s quarterfinal on Wednesday, July 9. He will now advance to the semifinal of the tournament for the second time in three years and face either Flavio Cobolli or Novak Djokovic on Friday.

The American delivered a brilliant performance, but his opponent was way better than him. There was not much difference between Sinner and Shelton in the opening set, though the Italian showed better efficiency on serve. The first set was very competitive and tight. Shelton took an early 2-0 lead in the tie-break, but Sinner made a comeback to win seven consecutive points – including four mini-breaks – and close out the set 7-6(2).

The World No.1 got a couple of good opportunities in the first game of the second set but failed to convert them. With strong service games, Shelton managed to keep pace with his opponent, but in pressure situations, he appeared more vulnerable. At 3-4, Shelton saved a break point against him, but when the score was 4-5, he faced another break point, and Sinner won the second set 6-4.

After winning the first two sets, Sinner looked much more relaxed  in the third set and won 88% of his first serve compared to Shelton’s 67%. Both players held their serves until 5-4, favouring the Italian. But then, Shelton faced three break points, and Sinner secured the break that gave him the victory.

‘Wimbledon is the most special tournament’: Jannik Sinner

After the match, Sinner said that he remembers the first time playing on Centre Court, and he does remember the first time playing semifinals at Wimbledon. The World No.1 further added that he’s looking forward to the semifinal as it’s very, very special.

“It’s always feeling so special and so amazing, Wimbledon is the most special tournament we have throughout the calendar. Being again in the last four here means a lot to me, and hopefully it’s gonna be a good match the next one,” Sinner added.
