MBBS Students: There is news of relief for the students studying medicine and their parents. Now there will be no need to wander here and there regarding problems related to fees, stipend, ragging, internship, or studies. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recommended the implementation of a three-tier grievance redressal system to resolve the problems of the students. Also, an online portal has been started, where students can directly register their complaints.

Thousands of students are troubled every year.

According to a report, more than 5,000 complaints are registered every year from medical colleges across the country. These include problems like ragging, mental harassment, delay in stipend, and overcharging.

UGC's 2023 report shows that more than 700 cases of ragging were reported from medical colleges alone. Many students do not register complaints due to fear or a lack of action, which increases the problems further. Many times this situation reaches serious matters like dropping out of studies, mental stress, and suicide.

What kind of complaints have been coming up?

Charging excessive fees
Delay or non-payment of stipend
Ragging or mental harassment
Unnecessary hurdles in an internship
Misbehavior of faculty or staff
Problems related to syllabus, attendance, examination, and evaluation

How will the problem be solved now?

Complaints will be resolved at three levels.

Medical college/institute level
Related university level
State DME or Health and Medical Education Department level
If the problem is not solved at all these levels, then students can directly register their complaint on the online portal of the National Medical Commission.

A complaint committee will be formed at every level.
A Grievance Redressal Committee comprising senior officials will be formed in every medical college, university, and state department. It will be mandatory for the institutes to provide complete information about this committee and an online complaint link on their website.

A record of every complaint will be kept – when it was received, what action was taken, and how long it was resolved.

Where and how to complain online?

If your complaint is not resolved at the college or university level, then you can register a complaint by visiting the NMC portal.
First, register on the portal

Then fill in the details of your complaint.

After that, the NMC team will take necessary action.

Important things for students and institutions

Students should first file a complaint at the same level where the problem started.

Complaints will be resolved quickly and transparently at every level.

Colleges and universities will have to provide the entire process and information about the committee on their website.
