After years of speculation and delays, Tesla is finally making its official entry into India, with its first showroom opening in Mumbai’s upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on July 15, 2025. The date marks more than just a product launch — it signals a new chapter in India’s electric mobility journey and could also bring Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, to Indian soil.

All Eyes on Mumbai as Tesla Sets Stage

According to a MotorBeam report citing industry sources, Tesla will hold a high-profile event at BKC to mark its India debut. While Tesla hasn’t issued a formal invite list yet, CEO Elon Musk is likely to attend. The event may also see the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underlining the significance of Tesla’s long-awaited arrival.

Tesla’s first showroom in India will be a 4,000 sq ft facility in BKC. It will showcase the company’s vehicles, provide a tech experience zone, and support its direct-to-customer sales model. After-sales support, however, will be handled through local partners.

Model Y to Lead the Charge

The first car to roll into India under the Tesla banner will be the Model Y, imported from Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory, which manufactures the right-hand drive variant. The EV is expected to be priced around ₹70 lakh (ex-showroom), targeting premium EV buyers and early adopters.

While the Model Y will spearhead the launch, Tesla’s Model 3 may not be far behind. Test mules of both vehicles have already been spotted on Indian roads. As interest builds, Tesla’s India strategy seems focused on establishing a premium, tech-forward identity before potentially moving toward local production.

Local Manufacturing, Starlink Launch May Follow

Tesla’s India entry comes at a time when the government is actively finalising an EV-friendly policy that includes incentives for local manufacturing. Should that framework be approved soon, Tesla could follow the playbook it used in China — starting with imports before transitioning to local assembly or manufacturing.

There’s also buzz that Musk could use the occasion to announce the launch of Starlink, his satellite-based broadband service. Starlink has already secured final regulatory approval from India’s National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center (IN-SPACe). While the service is not yet operational, the groundwork is being laid to bring high-speed satellite internet to rural and remote regions across the country.

Hiring Spree Hints at Long-Term Plans

Tesla has been actively recruiting for its India operations, with job postings across roles in sales, customer service, operations, and even Autopilot testing in cities like Mumbai and Delhi. The $97.7 billion electric vehicle giant is clearly in it for the long haul, and India appears to be a critical piece in its global growth puzzle.

As anticipation builds ahead of the July 15 event, one thing is clear — Tesla’s arrival is more than just a car launch. It could be a high-voltage moment for India’s EV ecosystem, especially if Musk does turn up.
