
The ill-fated Air India flight AI171 that crashed a month ago in Ahmedabad made a MAYDAY call just two seconds after it was cleared for take off, revealed the preliminary report.
The Boeing 787-8 got clearance for take off by the Air Traffic Control at 1:37 pm IST (08:07:33 UTC) and made the MAYDAY call at 1:39 pm IST (08:09:05 UTC), revealed the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in its preliminary report.
As per the report, Boeing 787-8 aircraft required pushback at 1:13 pm and was assigned Runway 23 for the take off to London Gatwick.
Here is what happened in those 26 minutes on June 12 before the deadly crash that killed 260 people, including 241 on board.
1:13:00 PM IST: Flight AI171 requested pushback and startup.
1:13:13 PM IST: ATC approved pushback.
1:16:59 PM IST: ATC approved startup.
1:19:12 PM IST: ATC asked the flight AI171 if it required the full length of the runway. The aircraft confirmed that it required the full length of Runway 23.
1:25:15 PM IST: ATC granted the aircraft's request for taxi clearance.
1:32:03 PM IST: Aircraft transferred from Ground to Tower Control.
1:33:45 PM IST: Aircraft instructed to line up on the Runway 23.
1:37:33 PM IST: Aircraft cleared for take-off from Runway 23.
1:39:05 PM IST: Flight AI171 made MAYDAY call.
According to a statement by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which was issued immediately after the crash on June 12, after the aircraft made the MAYDAY call, the aircraft gave no response to the calls made by the ATC.
