Pilgrimage and periods: what is the right way?

In a religious country like India, when women talk about issues like periods during pilgrimage , they are often surrounded by hesitation, fear and confusion. Despite years of desire to visit pilgrimage sites, long journeys and preparations, when menstruation suddenly begins, women start asking themselves – will it be a sin to visit God now?

These profound questions have been answered recently by the famous saint of Vrindavan, Premanand Govind Sharan Maharaj , in one of his discourses. His answer was not only deeply rooted in the scriptures, but was also extremely relevant and powerful from a social point of view.

Premanand Maharaj’s vision: Menstruation is not a crime, it is a respectable process

Brahmahatya and the contribution of women

Premanand Maharaj shared an esoteric mythological story while answering a question asked on Periods During Pilgrimage . He told that when Devraj Indra killed a Brahmin named Vritrasura, he was accused of Brahmahatya. This fault was divided into four parts by the Brahmarishis:

  1. Water – the foam visible in it is a part of Brahmahatya (murder of Brahma).
  2. Tree – The gum that comes out from it is its symbol.
  3. Land – the pits visible in it are symbolic of this defect.
  4. Female – in whom this defect occurs in the form of menstruation.

But Maharaj said that this fault is not a crime but a sacred responsibility . He said that when women are in a temple or pilgrimage during their periods, it is completely unfair to deprive them of the darshan of God.

“Do darshan, don’t offer gifts”: Premananda Maharaj’s solution

There is no greater purity than faith

Saint Premananda Maharaj said that if women are in a state of pilgrimage during periods , then they should:

  • should take a bath
  • Cleanliness of body and mind must be maintained
  • One should not touch the idol directly but see it from a distance
  • Do not offer any gifts or prasad
  • Do not participate in nearby religious activities, but can do Shravan and Kirtan

According to him, God looks at devotion and feelings , not the bodily processes.

Social Message: What is the true form of religion?

Women have been discriminated against for centuries

Women in India have long struggled with the question of whether religion gives them full rights? They have been socially isolated in situations like periods during pilgrimage – this has become a psychological, religious and social pressure.

His words send a great message:

This sentence not only enhances the self-esteem of women but also highlights the basic spirit of the religion – compassion, inclusion and devotion .

Religion, Periods and Women

 What does society say?

While even today many religious places deny entry to women in the name of pilgrimage during periods , saints like Premanand Maharaj start a new thinking . He connects religious principles with compassion , not with rigidity .

The need for change in religion

It is very important to create awareness on this subject among saints, religious leaders and the general public. Religion is incomplete unless it has a sense of equality for every devotee – be it a man or a woman.
