A CBI court in Delhi has sentenced industrialist Manoj Kumar Jayaswal to three years of rigorous imprisonment for using fake documents to get the Mahuagarhi coal block in Jharkhand.

The block was allocated to JAS Infrastructure and Capital Private Limited, where Jayaswal was the managing director at the time.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on Jayaswal and Rs 2 crore on the company.

This case is part of the wider investigation into coal block allocation scams involving private firms between 2006 and 2009.

After the court's decision, Jayaswal requested a suspension of the sentence so that he could file an appeal in the Delhi High Court.

Accepting his plea, the court said, "In view of the submissions made, the sentence of imprisonment awarded to the convict shall remain suspended for 60 days, and he is admitted to bail upon furnishing a personal bond and a surety bond of Rs 1 lakh each."

The CBI has been probing several such cases related to irregularities in coal block allocations, where companies allegedly gave false information to gain government approvals.
