New Delhi: Jannik Sinner clinched his maiden Wimbledon title, defeating Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at Centre Court on Sunday, July 13. The match lasted for more than three hours, as Sinner dominated the match after losing the first set against the Spaniard.
Alcaraz was aiming for his third consecutive Wimbledon title, but the world No.1 denied him, avenging his loss at the French Open last month. Sinner became the first Italian to win the Wimbledon singles title. He also won his career’s 4th grand slam. The match unfolded quite differently from the Roland Garros final as Alcaraz won the first set, but Sinner made a stunning comeback and didn’t let the advantage slip once he had it.
Sinner ends Alcaraz’s reign
Both players looked strong from the start, but the Spaniard seemed better in the long exchanges. The Italian failed to convert any break points against a focused Alcaraz early on. However, the break came for the Italian after a great game, and the world No.1 took a 4-2 lead. Alcaraz responded quickly by winning the next 12 out of 16 points to go 5-4 up. The Italian looked a little nervous as he struggled with his first serve, and Alcaraz won the first set by 6-4.
Sinner started the second set with a break that put him ahead quickly. In the next game, the Italian saved a break point against him and moved ahead to 2-0. The world No.1 was much more incisive in attacking his rival’s second serve and made great efforts from the baseline to keep pace with his opponent. Alcaraz managed to put some pressure back on him, but didn’t get any break opportunities. The Italian won the second set 6-4.
The Italian quickly created break opportunities in the third set but failed to convert them. Alcaraz also struggled with momentum early on, but regained confidence on his serve in the following games. With the score levelled at 4-4, the Spaniard had some problems with his first serve and conceded a break opportunity to Sinner, who didn’t miss the chance and took the lead. He closed the set with his serve 6-4.
Alcaraz made mistakes at the start of the fourth set and gave a break opportunity to Sinner, who took it with both hands. Sinner maintained his concentration and went 4-3 up. Alcaraz made a comeback on second serve at 15-40, but the Italian took a 5-3 lead. Alcaraz defended his service game, but Sinner won the last game without issues and won the final 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
