Foods not to store in step containers: Steel cans are attractive and durable in appearance, but keeping everything in them is not guaranteed in terms of health. Some foods can react with steel, which can reduce their quality and nutrients. Let’s know what things should be avoided to keep in steel cans or utensils.
Foods Not to Store in Steel Containers
1. Pickle
Pickle contains a very high amount of oil, salt and acid (such as vinegar or lemon). These elements can release metal ions by reacting with steel, which spoils the taste and colour of the pickle, and can also be harmful to health.
Best Container: Glass or ceramic
2. Curd
Yoghurt contains lactic acid, which can react slightly with steel. This can make the taste of curd sour or strange, and it can also hurt digestion.
Best Container: Soil, glass or food-grade plastic
3. Sour things like lemon or tomato
They contain citric acid, which can come in contact with steel and add metal particles. This affects the taste and nutrition of food.
Best Container: Glass or BPA-Free Plastic
4. Sliced fruits
The chopped fruits get oxidised quickly, and their colour and taste can deteriorate when exposed to steel. Other nutrients, including vitamin C, can also be reduced.
Best Container: Airtight Glass Jar or BPA-Free Container
5. Salt or many moist items
Keeping salt in steel for a long time can cause rust in the compartment and also affect the quality of the salt.
Best Container: Plastic or glass
