New Delhi: In response to corruption allegations made by the interim administration in Bangladesh, the World Health Organization (WHO) has placed Saima Wazed, the daughter of Sheikh Hasina, on leave as the Regional Director for the South-East Asia Region.

WHO responded to ANI by saying, “Saima Wazed, WHO’s Regional Director, SEARO, is currently on leave.”

Additionally, according to WHO, Dr. Catharina Boehme will be the officer in charge for the duration. “Dr. Catharina Boehme is acting as officer-in-charge during this time,” the organization said.

WHO said, “We have no further comment at this time,” when questioned further about Saima Wazed’s departure?

Reports state that when Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission brought charges against her for power abuse, fraud, and forgery, action was taken.

On July 15, Dr. Catharina Boehme is anticipated to arrive at the WHO SEARO office in New Delhi.

“We welcome the World Health Organization’s reported decision to place Saima Wazed on indefinite leave amid ongoing investigations into serious allegations of fraud, forgery, and abuse of power,” said Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary for the Bangladesh Chief Adviser, in a Facebook post on Saturday in response to the WHO’s action. This, in our opinion, is a crucial first step toward accountability.

“A permanent resolution is required, one that removes Ms. Wazed from her position, revokes all associated privileges, and restores integrity to this prestigious role and the credibility of the UN system as a whole,” he said.

Additionally, he said, “The emergence of transparency, honesty, and justice is welcomed by the people of Bangladesh and the international community.”
