1 million PVs sold again: So why the sales drop in Q1 FY26?

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) shared its vehicle data on production, domestic sales and exports for June 2025 and AprilJune 2025, revealing that the overall sales have sunk to 5.1% in Q1 FY26. The sales from April to June were mostly pulled down due to a major dip witnessed in the twowheelers segment with 6.2. On a positive note, the export sales were at an alltime high as it saw a growth of 22% in Q1. In an official statement, SIAM said, “Looking ahead to Q2, the overall industry outlook remains cautiously optimistic. While the challenges from Q1 may continue to linger in the near term, several positive macroeconomic and seasonal indicators could support a gradual recovery.”

Worrying signs for automobile sector

In the period from April to June, the production numbers for passenger vehicles were 12,44,374 units, which is a growth of 3.4%. On the flipside, in Q1 FY26, the domestic sales saw a dip of 1.4% as it registered 10,11,882 units as compared to last year’s 10,26,006 vehicles. What’s interesting to note is while the passenger cars segment slipped to an 11.2% dip, the utility vehicles sector jumped by 3.8%.

The twowheeler sector saw a shocking drop of 6.2% in the April to June period. Motorcycle sales plummeted to 9.2% while scooters saw a minor dip of 0.2%. The production of this segment was pretty much even from 58,59,186 in FY25 to 59,00,986 in FY26, with a slender increase of 0.7%. Apart from motorcycles, the other major drop in twowheelers was a 10.9% decline of mopeds.

It was good news for threewheelers, as its domestic sales in Q1 FY26 were 1,65,211 vehicles, registering 0.1% growth as compared to 1,65,081 units in FY25. A major drop was seen in the erickshaw division by 30.3%.

Export hike across all segments

The Q1 FY26 registered export units of 14,57,461, which was a 22.2% hike when compared to last year. A maximum growth of 52.8% was seen in the commercial vehicle segment as it exported 6,439 units as compared to 4,213 vehicles in FY25. The twowheelers section recorded a growth of 23.2% with 11,36,942 units as the mopeds segment shot up to 316.2%. The fourwheeler section, on the other hand, saw a jump of 13.2% with the van and utility vehicle segments leading the way with growth of 34% and 26.2% respectively.
