The rainfall activity has intensified across Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts through mid-week from July 16-18. The latest forecast includes Thiruvananthapuram under rainfall alert, with the IMD predicting continued wet conditions across the state until at least July 20.
Parts Of Kerala Receive Yellow, Orange Rainfall Alert
According to an official bulletin released on IMD, the widespread rain or thundershowers were reported in most parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep on July 14, and meteorologists anticipate the spell to persist over the coming days. As per the IMD, an orange alert—indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 20 cm in 24 hours—has been issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kannur, and Kasaragod on Wednesday, July 16. The alert continues for Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur on Thursday, July 17.
A yellow alert—signifying heavy rainfall between 7 to 11 cm—is in effect for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on July 16, and will extend to include Kannur and Kasaragod the following day.
In Thiruvananthapuram, residents can expect a generally cloudy sky with intermittent rain through the morning of July 15, as per the IMD’s latest bulletin.
Alongside the rainfall forecast, the IMD has also issued wind and marine warnings for Kerala and Lakshadweep, cautioning fishermen and coastal communities about rough sea conditions.
Low-Pressure Area Formed
The renewed rainfall activity is being attributed to a well-marked low pressure area that formed over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Rajasthan, originating from an upper-air cyclonic circulation over central India. The system is currently moving west-northwest and is expected to travel further into Rajasthan within the next 48 hours, as per the bulletin issued on Tuesday.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable and low-lying regions, particularly those under orange alert, to stay vigilant.
