England captain Ben Stokes played a key role to lead his team to secure a convincing 22-runs victory over India at Lords according to teammate Joe Root. Stokes delivered an outstanding performance taking five wickets and scoring 77 runs. He also pulled off a remarkable run-out of Rishabh Pant contributing across both innings with relentless effort. Motivated by their captains performance England clinched the third Test at Lord’s on the final day taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The 34-year old had to go through a lot of physical toll as he bowled 44-over which included a demanding 9.2- and 10-over spell on Day 5. Despite sustaining two severe hamstring injuries in the past 12 months this was the most Stokes had bowled in six years. Joe Root the former England captain said that he was surprised by the all-rounders dedication and calmness on the field You can try but it doesnt make any difference. I tried for five years. I mentioned it but he doesnt always listen to me. He didnt always listen to me. He didnt listen to me when i was captain! said Root Thats his call now. It was an incredible effort to be able to do that but thats just hoe hes built i guess. Hes just desperate to be the man and make things happen. Its great sign for us moving forward it really is because thats back to his best. Hes got that mentality and that desire to win games and were lucky to have him ad our leader Root added Although head coach Brendon McCullum acknowledged that Stokes knows his body best still he sent a message through bowling consultant Tim Southee during the first innings of the third Test match asking whether Stokes might reach a breaking point.I was just panicking that he wasnt going to make it through the game after a couple of bad injuries but he clearly trusts his body now. He knows what hes doing and hes got a good handle on where hes at physically. he said Following the conclusion of the match Stokes spoke about his exhaustion telling reporters he was looking forward to some well-earned rest. I could not wait to just lie on my bed for four days and then be raring to go for (next weeks fourth Test at) Manchester. The fourth Test at Old Trafford is scheduled to begin on July 23.
