Born on July 1901 in an elite Bengali family in Kolkata, Mukherjee’s father Ashutosh Mukherjee was known as an educationist in the state. Growing up in a reading and writing environment, Mukherjee became the Vice Chancellor of Kolkata University at the age of just 33 years. From there they reached Kolkata Assembly. It was from here that his political life started but due to differences he went away.

Mukherjee used to oppose Article 370

Mukherjee continued to oppose Article 370. He wanted Kashmir to be considered an integral part of the country like other states and equal laws should also be implemented there. This is the reason that when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave him a ministerial position in his interim government, he resigned in no time. Mukherjee accused Nehru of appeasement on the Kashmir issue. He also said that two flags, two constitution and two heads will not run in one country.

Kashmir left after resigning

He moved to Kashmir after resigning. They wanted no permission to go to this part of the country. During the protest against Nehru’s policies, Mukherjee wanted to go to Kashmir and give his views, but on 11 May 1953, he was arrested as soon as he entered Srinagar. At that time there was Sheikh Abdullah’s government. Mukherjee, who was arrested along with two colleagues, was first sent to Srinagar Central Jail and then from there he was transferred to a cottage outside the city.

Mukherjee’s deteriorating health

Mukherjee’s health, who was in jail for more than a month, was continuously deteriorating. He complained of fever and back pain. On the intervening night of June 19 and 20, it was discovered that he was suffering from plauritis, also suffering in 1937 and 1944. Dr. Ali Mohammed injected him to Streptomycin. Mukherjee told Dr. Ali that his family doctor has said that this drug does not suit Mukherjee’s body, yet Ali assured him and gave him this injection.

Death due to heart attack

On 22 June, Mukherjee felt difficulty in breathing. When he was rushed to the hospital, it was found that he had a heart attack. The state government announced that Mukherjee died of a heart attack on June 23 at 3:40 am. Only one nurse Rajdulari Tiku was present to take care of Mukherjee while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Tiku later said in his statement that when Mukherjee was in pain, he called Dr. Jagannath Zutshi. Seeing the critical condition, Zutthi called Dr. Ali and after some time Mukherjee passed away at 2:25 pm.
