Respiratory issues are increasingly common — from seasonal allergies and pollution to post-Flu fatigue and chronic asthma. In Yogic science, the breath is not just oxygen intake. Healthy breathing supports digestion, detoxification, elimination, quality sleep, and emotional balance — making it a key pillar of overall wellbeing.
Understanding Pranayam:
Praṇayam, the Yogic science of conscious breath regulation, and Shatkarmas, traditional cleansing techniques, offer powerful tools to strengthen the lungs, detoxify the body, and boost vitality.
Active, dynamic breathing techniques that work with the upper parts of the lungs can help build respiratory strength. However, these must be done in an activating, not aggravating way to avoid hyperventilation or strain. Beginners should always learn under the guidance of a qualified teacher.
Practices For The Respiratory Wellness:
Here are some practices that may be helpful for respiratory wellness, especially in the humid, allergy-prone monsoon season:
- Jala Neti (saline nasal rinse): Clears congestion and flushes allergens
- Kapalabhāti (skull-shining breath): Detoxifies and tones the lower lungs
- Bhastrikā (bellows breath): Activates and clears the upper lungs
- Full Yogic Breath: Teaches the body to breathe fully and consciously
- Kumbhaka (breath retention): Builds breath control and oxygen efficiency
Asthmatics and those recovering from illness should begin slowly and gently. Medium-paced techniques and rest between rounds are often more effective than pushing through.
