Pat Cummins Career Overview

Patrick James Cummins was born on May 8, 1993, in Wstmead, New South Wales. Like most young Australian boys of his age, Pat took up cricket, eventually representing New South Wales at the under-17 and U-19 levels. But it was in 2011, at the age of 17, that he became the highest wicket taker of the Big Bash League that season and also impressed in the Sheffield Shield the same season.

His fantastic performances at such a young age resulted in him being picked for the Australian Cricket Team for the tour to South Africa in late 2011. He made his international cricket debut against the Proteas in a three-ODI series, taking 10 wickets. A month later, he made his Test debut on the same tour at the age of 18 years 193 days. He became the youngest Test debutant for Australia since Ian Craig in 1953

However, injuries prevented the youngster from becoming a regular part of the national team. After missing the 2011-12 summer, he represented the Kangaroos in the 2012 T20 World Cup, but was ruled out of the Australian home season again due to injury.

While he was a semi-regular part of the national team for the coming years, it wasn’t until 2017 that he made his place in the Australian Cricket Team permanent. In January 2019, following the Sandpaper-gate, he was named one of the two vice-captains of Australia, and in 2021, he became the captain of the side after Tim Paine’s resignation. Just before that, he was named the Player of the Series of the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy for taking 21 wickets in four matches, despite his team losing 2-1.

In 2023, Pat Cummins went down in history books for having one of the greatest years as a captain in international cricket. First, he led Australia to a win in the World Test Championship final that year against the favourites India. And then, he led the team to a triumph in the 2023 ODI World Cup. defeating the favourites and home team India in the final.

One of the most high-profile franchise cricketers in the world, Cummins has played in most T20 leagues around the world. In the IPL, he currently captains Sunrisers Hyderabad, taking the team to the IPL 2024 final.
