Olympique de Marseille midfielder Valentin Rongier (30) has joined Ligue 1 rivals Rennes, both clubs have announced. The FC Nantes Academy product has signed a three-year deal with his formative club’s arch-rivals. Rongier, entering the final year of his contract at Marseille, had refused an extension and will now be replaced by new OM signing Angel Gomes. It has been reported that Rongier will cost Rennes a €7m transfer fee, taking into account performance- add-ons.
Given his profile as a former Nantes graduate and several rivalry- banter from him, Rongier’s arrival in Rennes will no doubt raise a few eyebrows in Rennes. The club’s most prominent ultra group, Roazhon Celtic Kop, voiced their anger and described the move as an affront. The group strongly implied they would not accept the midfielder’s presence at Roazhon Park.
