India’s first Test at Manchester occurred in July 1936, when the Maharajah of Vizianagram led the side to a draw. That began a record that now stands at: 0 wins, 4 defeats, and 5 draws across nine Test matches at this ground.
The most recent Test at Old Trafford before now took place in 2014, ending in an innings defeat for India.
India’s highest-ever Test total at Old Trafford is 432, achieved during the hard-fought draw in 1990. Mohammad Azharuddin led the way with an outstanding 179 in that match—his best score at the venue.
On the bowling front, Dilip Doshi delivered India’s best innings figures at Old Trafford: 6 for 102 in the 1982 encounter, further illustrating the bowler-friendly conditions at the ground.
1936 (Draw): India posted 203 and later 390/5 in reply to 571/8 by England.
1946 (Draw): Rain played spoilsport; India reached 152/9 in their chase.
1952 & 1959 (Losses): England trounced India; India were dismissed for 58 & 82 in 1952.
1971 (Draw): Despite England’s 386, rain cut short proceedings on Day 5.
1974 (Loss): India lost by 113 runs after posting 246 and 182.
1982 (Draw): Heavy weather interruptions prevented a result.
1990 (Draw): A spirited chase by India led by Azharuddin’s 179.
2014 (Loss): India bundled out for 152 and 161, losing by an innings & 54 runs.
From historical first-class struggles to the erratic weather conditions, Old Trafford has remained India’s weakest Test ground. Despite talented batting efforts and occasional standout bowling, the combination of classic English seam-friendly pitches and sporadic rainfall has curtailed India’s ability to claim a win here. As of now, Old Trafford remains the only Test venue where India have never tasted success in nine attempts.
India’s Manchester Test may offer a fresh opportunity, but history suggests a tall task awaits those in blue.
