The wait for a fullyelectric Range Rover just got longer. We all know that Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has big plans set in motion for its future that will be laced with more and more electric vehicles (EVs). In fact, a few months ago the Indianowned British carmaker announced the new avatar of Jaguar as an electric car brand.
However, it seems it will be a while before we see a batterypowered car roll out from a JLR facility. As per a recent report by The Guardian, JLR is rescheduling the debut of its nextgeneration electric cars under the Jaguar brand. The carmaker has further confirmed the delay in launch of the Range Rover Electric that has been pushed to next year.
Previously slated to launch in 2024, the Range Rover Electric was later supposed to hit the roads by the end of this year. Now, the launch has been pushed back further. According to the report, the company has already informed about this delay to its customers who have already booked the batterypowered Range Rover. Around 62,000 customers had signed up for the Range Rover Electric till now.
Range Rover Electric launch: Reason for delay
The recent report mentions, JLR has delayed the launches of its new electric Range Rover and electric Jaguar models to allow for additional testing and to wait for stronger market demand. As we are all aware, demand for EVs has saturated in several international markets, including Europe. This has prompted many car manufacturers across the world to reconsider their ambitious EV plans.
On top of it, all vehicle manufacturers across the world have been hit hard by US President Donald Trump’s new tariff regime that has put all future plans into haywire. Last week, JLR reported a 15.1% drop in sales in the previous quarter after a temporary pause in exports to the US. However, sales are expected to improve after Britain signs a limited trade deal with the US that will allow lower 10% tariffs on the first 100,000 exports.
Another possible reason for this delay is likely to be the upcoming Tata battery factory in Somerset, United Kingdom. This facility, which is seen as critical to JLR’s longterm EV supply chain, has also seen a delay. Production of batteries in this facility will now commence only from 2027. This will align with the debuts of Range Rover Electric as well as the Jaguar EVs.
Range Rover Electric powertrain
JLR had previously revealed a few key specifications of the Range Rover Electric. The luxury electric SUV will feature a 117 kWh battery pack, making it the biggest power unit in a production electric car. This battery unit is expected to return a range of 500 km on a single charge. The Range Rover electric will be driven by twin motors that are expected to churn out a cumulative 550 horses and 851 Nm of torque.
