Mumbai Rains: Wall Collapse Sparks Landslide In Bhandup, Buildings Crumble Downhill

Heavy rains triggered a landslide in the Bhandup area of Mumbai after a large wall collapsed on a 50-foot hilltop behind Omega High School in Khindipada. The incident took place on Tuesday, and no injuries were reported.

The collapse brought down five houses built along the slope. Footage of the dramatic incident was also caught on camera.

The video, recorded by locals and widely shared on social media, shows homes tumbling down the hillside as mud and debris slide rapidly. The landslide occurred suddenly, taking many by surprise. Some residents were seen escaping just moments before the collapse.

According to officials, continuous rainfall had weakened the protective retaining wall built around the hill. A visible crack developed in the structure, eventually leading to the collapse and the destruction of nearby houses.

“This mudslide in Bhandup should act as a warning sign," said Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad on X while sharing the video of the incident.

“Thankfully, some of the houses here have already been evacuated. All necessary steps must be taken to prevent possible loss of life. Urge the authorities to be alert and audit any such vulnerable spots once again and ensure people are evacuated. Heavy rains have been predicted for today also. Stayy safe, Mumbai," Gaikwad added.

While emergency teams arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, no formal injuries or casualties were reported. Authorities have begun clearing debris and assessing the safety of nearby structures.

City On Alert Amid Ongoing Rains

The incident in Bhandup comes amid widespread heavy rainfall across Mumbai and neighbouring districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas through Thursday. A red alert has also been issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts.

Mumbai recorded steady rainfall throughout Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Low-lying areas like the Andheri subway experienced waterlogging, while traffic was heavily affected on major roads, including the Eastern and Western Express Highways.
According to the IMD, the downpour is a result of a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify rainfall in Maharashtra’s Konkan region and ghat areas.
