Jose Mourinho Slams United Boss: Jose Mourinho has never been one to disguise his opinions, and the former Manchester United manager has now trained his sights on Sir Jim Ratcliffe, questioning the INEOS chief’s footballing credentials as United prepare for another season of transition under head coach Ruben Amorim.
Jose Mourinho Slams United Boss, Backs Amorim
Speaking to Portuguese daily RecordMourinho suggested that Manchester United’s deepening malaise is rooted not just in misfiring players or unstable management, but in a hierarchy lacking footballing experience.
The Portuguese tactician, now at Fenerbahce, defended his countryman Amorim, describing him as a manager of “great potential and personality” and claiming he has the capacity “to do great work” at Old Trafford, provided he’s given the institutional backing so often absent in recent years.
Leadership in Question
Mourinho’s comments come when United are going through one of their toughest times in history, since Ratcliffe took control of football operations in early 2024. But his arrival, though once hoped to bring new transformation in the club, hasn’t done much to save the sinking ship. Instead, the situation has gotten worse as United finished 15th on the Premier League table 2024-25.
This season, the club brought in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. It reportedly cost them over £120 million. But the continuous investment though hasn’t been fruitful and this has brought the question over the club’s recruiting strategy.
Amorim, once considered among Europe’s most promising coaches after his work at Sporting CP, has struggled to impose a clear identity during his short spell in Manchester, with United’s performances still uneven and the pressure mounting.
A Familiar Critique
Mourinho’s barbed assessment echoes his own frustrations during his tenure at United, where he often hinted at institutional inertia and a lack of sporting direction at board level. His latest comments, while couched in support of Amorim, sharpen a broader critique, that Old Trafford’s problems are less about who sits in the dugout and more about who calls the shots above it.
As another Premier League season looms, the pressure on Ratcliffe’s regime to demonstrate footballing competency, not just corporate ambition, will only intensify.
