New Delhi: Joe Root delivered a masterclass at Old Trafford during the fourth Test against India, not just with his bat but with a record book in hand. His knock of 150 off 248 balls which was studded with 14 boundaries powered England to 544/7 by the end of Day 3 and gave them a healthy 186-run lead. But the real story was in the layers of history he peeled back with the remarkable ton he scored..

Here’s a complete look at all the records shattered, equaled or freshly created by Root during this unforgettable innings.

Second-highest run scorer in Test history

In a span of just eight deliveries, Root went past Rahul Dravid (13,288) and Jacques Kallis (13,289) and by the second session, he also overtook Ricky Ponting (13,378) climbing to No. 2 in the all-time list of Test run scorers. He now trails behind Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) as he keeps chasing the summit.

First English batter with 1000 Test runs at Old Trafford

Root became the first England player to reach 1000 Test runs at the iconic Manchester venue. He crossed that milestone early on Day 3 when he was on 22, adding another landmark to his home dominance.

1000+ Test Runs at two venues in England

Only two other Englishmen, Graham Gooch and Alastair Cook, have scored over 1000 Test runs at more than one home ground. With 2166 at Lord’s and now 1128 at Old Trafford, Root joins that elite club.

More 50+ scores than Kallis and Ponting

Root now has 104 scores of 50 or more in Test cricket which puts him ahead of Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting who are both tied at 103. Only Sachin Tendulkar has more, with 119.

Most Test centuries against India

Root is now out on his own with the most centuries scored by any batter against India in Tests. So far, he has scored 12 in 34 matches. Australia’s Steve Smith is second having scored 11 in 24 matches.

Nine Test centuries against one opponent at home

The century in Manchester was Root’s ninth against India in home conditions and with this ton he broke Don Bradman’s long-standing record of eight hundreds at home against England.

Equals Sangakkara’s record

Root’s 38th Test ton brought him level with Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara. He’s now fourth in the all-time list behind Tendulkar (51), Kallis (45), and Ponting (41).

Equals Jack Hobbs’ record

Jack Hobbs scored 12 centuries against Australia across 41 Tests. And now Root has smashed 12 against India from just 34 Tests, equaling the mark for most by an England batter against a single side.

23 Test hundreds in England

This was Root’s 23rd century in England, putting him on level terms with Ricky Ponting (Australia), Jacques Kallis (South Africa) and Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) for most home Test centuries.

Most runs scored against a single bowler

Root now holds the record for most runs scored off one bowler in Tests. Over the years he has scored 588 runs against Ravindra Jadeja and on the fourth Day of the Manchester Test surpassed the 577 Steve Smith scored against Stuart Broad.

Third-most Test runs in a single country

Root now has 7195 Test runs in England, overtaking Jayawardene’s 7167 in Sri Lanka. Only Ponting (7578 in Australia) and Tendulkar (7216 in India) have more runs in a single country.

16 150+ scores: Fifth on the all-time list

Root’s 150 run knock in Manchester was his 16th such score in Tests, placing him fifth all-time alongside Mahela Jayawardene. Only Tendulkar (20), Sangakkara and Lara (19 each), and Bradman (18) are ahead of him.

From debuting with a gritty 73 in Nagpur back in 2012 to becoming the heartbeat of England’s Test team, Joe Root’s journey has been built on consistency, adaptability and class. What he pulled off at Old Trafford wasn’t just a great innings rather it was a reminder that he’s not done rewriting history just yet.
