Instagram has recently deleted about 1.35 lakh accounts, and the reason for this is very serious. Meta, which is the parent company of Instagram, said that these accounts were making objectionable comments or demanding sexual content from accounts that were being operated by adults on behalf of children. Simply put, these accounts were targeting children.
The biggest clean-up campaign
Not only this, Meta has also removed about 5 lakh more accounts on Instagram and Facebook, which were linked to these criminals. This is considered to be one of the biggest "clean-up operations" in the history of the social media platform.
Why this sudden strictness now?
In recent months, the pressure on social media platforms regarding the safety of children and teenagers has increased significantly. Especially in the US, lawmakers are constantly questioning apps like Instagram, saying that these platforms are not only addictive but are also proving to be mentally harmful to children due to cyberbullying, grooming, and unrealistic beauty standards.
Meta's new initiative
Meta has now started rolling out a new default security setting, which will apply to accounts run by teenagers and children. Under this, messages from unknown people will be limited, and offensive and indecent messages will be automatically blocked. This is a small step, but important, so that teenagers can get a little more security on social media.
Is America's new law changing Meta?
A bill, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), was introduced in the US, which seeks to make these types of security arrangements legally mandatory. This bill was passed by the Senate last year, but it could not pass the House. It is being reintroduced this year, and it is believed that this new initiative by Meta could be part of the preparations ahead of the upcoming rules.
