Major Announcement for Sanitation Workers in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: On Saturday, Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi introduced a significant welfare initiative aimed at sanitation workers. This package includes life insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh and a compensation of Rs 30 lakh for those who lose their lives while performing their duties.

This announcement took place during the launch of a two-day workshop titled “Transforming Core Sanitation Work: Safety, Dignity & Inclusion” held in Bhubaneswar.

Majhi also mentioned that essential sanitation workers, particularly those involved in cleaning sewage and septic tanks, would receive mobile phones. Additionally, housing benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana will be made available to them.

He emphasized, “It is our ethical duty as a society to ensure justice, safety, and dignity for our sanitation workers.”

Furthermore, a 15-day statewide campaign focused on information, education, and communication will be conducted from August 15 to 30 to enhance awareness and bolster sanitation initiatives.

Majhi praised the Garima Yojana, describing it as a benchmark for other states. He noted that this program has played a crucial role in ensuring the safety, dignity, and social security of sanitation workers, aiding Odisha in achieving national sanitation goals.

He commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on August 15, 2014, which aims to establish household sanitation as a cornerstone for India's progress.

Through the Garima Yojana, sanitation workers are being identified, trained, and provided with safety equipment. They also benefit from skill development training and access to emergency sanitation services.

According to Majhi, over 10,000 sanitation workers across 115 cities in Odisha have been officially recognized as skilled and highly skilled professionals.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated an exhibition showcasing modern sanitation and safety equipment and honored several sanitation workers.
