A man has died after suffering a cardiac arrest on board a boat attempting to reach the UK, French authorities have confirmed. The tragic incident happened when the small vessel was turned back to France after an attempt to cross the Channel this morning (Saturday)

When the boat arrived at Equihen beach, near Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France, a passenger was found on board in cardiac arrest, the Pas-de-Calais department's sub-prefecture said.

Despite emergency services intervening at the scene, the man died soon after. An investigation is under way under the authority of the prosecutor to determine the circumstances of the man's death, the French authorities confirmed.

The death of a migrant comes as multiple protests broke out this week near hotels in the UK which have been housing asylum seekers. Sir Keir Starmer has been warned he could face a potential revolt from his own Labour MPs if he fails to stop the practice of using hotels to accommodate migrants.

Later on Saturday an RNLI lifeboat carried migrants who have made the voyage into the Port of Dover. Picture showed a group of migrants huddled under blankets and orange life jackets aboard the boat.

According to UK Home Office provisional statistics, almost 24,000 people have arrived on small boats in the UK in 2025.

Britain has seen a week of unrest outside hotels housing migrants with large gatherings in Essex, Norfolk, Yorkshire, and in London's Canary Wharf.

Sir Keir Starmer has insisted there is "lots of housing available" to accommodate both rising numbers of homeless people and asylum seekers.

But the Prime Minister was unable to say specifically where extra housing needed to help homeless families or migrants would come from, as he faced questions about the housing crisis from a group of senior MPs.

The Liaison Committee - which is made up of MPs who chair the various Commons select committees - put it to the Prime Minister that local councils looking to house homeless families were competing with the Home Office, which is seeking to house asylum seekers.

Sir Keir replied: "I know, which is why I am so furious at the last government for leaving tens of thousands of asylum seekers unprocessed, with nowhere to live, other than accommodation paid for by the taxpayer."

The PM faced criticism from outside the Liaison Committee for his claim, with Conservative MP Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, writing on social media site X: "There are 1.3 million people on social housing waiting lists in England alone.

"But Keir Starmer believes there's 'lots of housing' spare we should be giving to illegal migrants

"That's madness. What is he going on about?"
