Bank customers may need to plan their visits carefully in August 2025 as public and private sector banks will remain closed for a total of 15 days across the month, according to the holiday calendar released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The list includes weekly offs on all Sundays and the customary second and fourth Saturdays, alongside major national and regional holidays such as Independence Day, Ganesh Chaturthi and Janmashtami.
Major Festive Holidays Ahead: Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, and Ganesh Chaturthi
The month kicks off with regular Sunday closures on August 3 and August 10, followed by several festival-linked holidays across different states. Banks in Gangtok will shut on August 8 for Tendong Lho Rum Faat, while August 9 marks Raksha Bandhan and Jhulana Purnima in cities like Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Bhubaneshwar, alongside the second Saturday off across the country.
A major nationwide closure will take place on August 15 for Independence Day, which also coincides with Parsi New Year (Shahenshahi) and Janmashtami celebrations. Several states will see additional holidays on August 16 for Janmashtami (Shravan Vad-8) and Krishna Jayanthi.
Other regional observances include Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur’s birthday in Tripura on August 19 and Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva in Assam on August 25. Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27 will lead to closures in key banking hubs like Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad, followed by select state holidays for Nuakhai and the second day of Ganesh celebrations on August 28.
Digital Services Stay Operational
While branch operations will pause on these dates, essential banking services remain accessible online. Internet banking, mobile apps, ATMs and UPI will function as normal unless notified otherwise.
The RBI issues its annual holiday calendar under the Negotiable Instruments Act, covering both national holidays and region-specific observances. Customers are advised to check with their local branches for any additional closures and plan financial transactions—like cheque deposits or branch visits—accordingly.
