A horrifying video recorded outside the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar showed the chaos and desperation after the stampede that claimed the lives of six people and left dozens injured.
The clip shared on X by Hindustan, which was recorded outside the temple, shows the influx of devotees moving forward in a chaotic atmosphere, as a man shouts “peeche jaao" (go back) in a bid to soothe the panic situation.
The people were seen pushing each other and attempting to escape the crowd. Several of them also tried to scale a structure to take themselves to safety. In the middle of the confusion, a man can be heard urging people to move back.
Six people were confirmed dead while over 25 were injured in the stampede that broke out earlier in the day over a “rumour" that an electric wire had broken.
“We found through photos and videos that someone spread the rumour of electric wire breaking, while looking at the injured or the dead, we did not get any such indication… We will investigate who spread the rumour that caused the stampede, and a magisterial inquiry will be set up investigating cameras and other means… The death of 6 people has been confirmed," DM Mayur Dixit told reporters.
SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal told news agency ANI that the stampede was triggered by the rumour of an electric shock on stairs 100 metres down the temple route.
Around 35 people were rushed to the hospital, of whom 6 were declared dead.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami condoled the deaths in the incident and ordered a magisterial inquiry. He also announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
“At around 9 am, a very unfortunate incident happened. Due to rumours, a stampede occurred near the stairs, six people died, a few others were injured, and they were taken to the hospital. May the families get the strength to bear the loss. Magisterial investigation has been ordered. There would be required action," Dhami said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the incident and said that the local administration is assisting those affected.
