New Delhi: England carved out another golden chapter in their football history, outlasting Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout to win the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final and defend their European title. It was a night that saw familiar heroes rise again with Chloe Kelly who slotted home the decisive penalty to seal England’s 4-1 win in the shootout after a tense 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The Lionesses had to come from behind once again, just as they have throughout this rollercoaster of a tournament. They went into halftime trailing after Mariona Caldentey’s first-half header that put Spain in the driver’s seat but England’s belief never wavered. Once again, they proved why they are champions.

Kelly delivers again, Wiegman makes her mark

The momentum turned when Chloe Kelly was introduced off the bench for a struggling Lauren James. It was her pinpoint cross that found Alessia Russo, who headed in the equaliser to breathe life back into the Lionesses. From there, they soaked up pressure and trusted their nerves, waiting for the moment they had rehearsed penalties.

It was goalkeeper Hannah Hampton who rose to the occasion, saving two of Spain’s spot-kicks as England edged closer to glory. When Kelly stepped up, the outcome never seemed in doubt. Her calm finish sparked wild celebrations and confirmed England’s place as back-to-back European champions and the first England team ever to win a major trophy on foreign soil.

Spain fall short despite strong run

Spain had been unbeaten throughout the tournament and came into the final as slight favourites, especially after their 2023 World Cup triumph. But England’s tactical discipline and experience on the big stage ultimately made the difference. Spain created chances and controlled spells of the match but they couldn’t shake the English defence or find composure from the spot.

While Spain’s search for a European title continues, England will celebrate not just another trophy but a team that has become the very definition of resilience. For manager Sarina Wiegman, it’s a third European crown and her second with England as she keeps cementing her legacy as one of the greatest minds in the women’s game.
England now return home to a hero’s welcome, with eyes already turning to the 2027 World Cup and more history to be written.
