On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, Union Health Minister JP Nadda has said that India is facing this global health challenge firmly. This day, celebrated on 28 July every year, is celebrated with the aim of spreading awareness about viral hepatitis and strengthening its prevention and management efforts.

Nadda said on the social media platform ‘X’, “World Hepatitis Day is an effective platform to make people aware of the disease and prevention measures. India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is fiercely competing with this challenge through the ‘National Viral Hepatitis Control Program’ and is succeeding in saving people’s lives.” He described this year’s theme ‘Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down’ as important, which highlights the need to remove the social obstacles to the disease.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India ranks second after China in cases of Hepatitis B and C. In the year 2022, India cases of hepatitis B and 55 million hepatitis C were reported in India, which is about 11.6% of global affairs.

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav also said on the occasion that we have to make public awareness efforts against hepatitis more effective. He said, “Timely investigation, treatment and vaccination are being ensured through the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program in India, so that more and more people can be protected from this deadly disease.”

Hepatitis is mainly from five types of viruses – A, B, C, D and E, which affect the liver. Methods of spreading these viruses, severity and prevention measures vary. The purpose of this day is to work towards eliminating financial, social and systemic obstacles, especially social stigma,.

Experts believe that cases of Hepatitis B and C can be largely controlled by timely investigation and proper treatment. To achieve the global goal of eliminating hepatitis by the year 2030, it is extremely important to comprehensize investigation and treatment.
