-Supream court expressed concern over the attitude of boycott of Election Commission
New Delhi . The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the Election Commission’s reluctance in accepting Aadhaar and voter ID card as a valid document in the ongoing voter list revision work in Bihar and said that any document could be forged. A bench headed by Justice Suryakant expressed concern over the attitude of the Election Commission’s boycott and also stressed the need to include both documents in the verification process.
Justice Suryakant said that any document in the world can be forged. He urged the Election Commission why Aadhaar and voter ID card is not being fully accepted, while Aadhaar is already being sought in the registration form. A division bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that any documents listed by the ECI could be forged and questioned the argument behind the exclusion of the Aadhaar card and the Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) from the list of acceptable documents.
The court said that both these documents should be included. Tomorrow, you can not only look at the base, but also 11 out of 11 documents. This is a different issue, but we are on collective boycott. It should have collective inclusion. Include Aadhaar as well. The court was hearing the petitions challenging the June 24 directive of the Election Commission for special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists before the state assembly elections.
According to the petitioners, this step violates the process fixed under Articles 14, 19, 21, 325 and 326 of the Constitution and deviates from the procedure fixed under the Representation of the Representation Act, 1950 and Voter Registration Rules, 1960. The Election Commission defended its directive, saying that it has the right to do so under Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 21 (3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
