If you do not get your driving license renewed before its validity expires, then you may face fines and other legal problems.

Online DL Renewal Process

Visit Parivahan Seva Website: First of all, you have to visit the official website of Parivahan Seva (https://parivahan.gov.in/).

Select Online Services: Click on the “Apply Online” option and select “Driving Licence Related Services”.

Select State: Select your state from the drop-down list.

Select Driving License Services: Click on “Services on Driving Licence” or “Driver Licence Services (Renewal/Duplicate/AEDL/Other)” from the “Driving License” menu.

Apply for DL Renewal: Click on “DL Renewal Application”.

Read Instructions: The instruction page will open in front of you, read it and click on “Continue”.

Fill in the details: Fill in the required details like driving license number, date of birth, category of driving license holder, state and RTO.

Confirm and Proceed: Select “Proceed” and confirm your driving license details.

Upload documents and pay fee: Upload the required documents and pay the prescribed fee.

Print the receipt: Take a print of the acknowledgement receipt and keep it safe for future reference.

Offline DL Renewal Process (Example Haryana)

Visit RTO Office: Visit your local RTO office.

Fill DL Renewal Form: Collect the application form for DL renewal (Form 2) and fill it.

Submit Documents: Submit the filled form and copies of required documents to the authorities.

Pay Fee: Pay the prescribed service fee and get the receipt.

Documents Required

  • Original Driving Licence
  • Form 9 (Application for Renewal)
  • Form 1 (Self-Declaration of Physical Fitness)
  • Form 1A (Medical Certificate – Mandatory for age above 40 years or commercial vehicles)
  • Passport size photographs (2 or 3)
  • Proof of Identity and Address: Self-attested copies of Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID or Passport.
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC): If applying in another state.
  • Driver Refresher Training Certificate: For heavy motor vehicles.

Important points

Validity: The validity of a driving license is usually 20 years or until the holder turns 40, whichever is earlier.

Grace period: After the DL expires, there is a grace period of 30 days in which it can be renewed without penalty.

Penalty: If renewal is done after 30 days, a penalty of up to ₹1500 will have to be paid

License cancellation: If the license is not renewed within a year of the expiry date, it is considered cancelled.

Renewal Fees

General renewal fee: Can be around ₹200-₹400, but it may vary from state to state.

Additional fee for smart card DL: ₹200.

Penalty for late application: Applying after the grace period may attract a penalty of ₹300 and an additional penalty of ₹1000 per year.
