Olympique de Marseille have confirmed the departure of Ismaël Koné (23), who joins US Sassuolo on loan but with an option to make the deal permanent for an undisclosed fee, which has been reported to be around €12.5m. The option reportedly will become permanent if Sassuolo avoid relegation from Serie A this season.
The Canadian international joined Marseille from Watford FC on a permanent deal last summer, but struggled to find his feet in La Provence under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. The midfielder was sent out on loan during the winter transfer window, where he joined Stade Rennais.
At Rennes, Koné made 13 appearances and even managed to find the net twice (the second of which came against his parent club during a 4-2 defeat to end the season). However, he struggled to pin down a place in the starting lineup and spent most of his loan spell as a late substitute.
