Ajay Devgn tried to do something different with Thank God a comedy-drama exploring karma death and redemption through the lens of an afterlife game. Siddharth Malhotra played Ayaan Kapoor a debt-ridden real estate agent whose selfish choices put a strain on his marriage to honest cop Ruhi (Rakul Preet Singh). But when a car crash lands him in a surreal courtroom of the dead presided over by Chitragupt (Ajay Devgn) he’s forced to account for every sin. How did the story unfold?Clad in a slick suit Ajay’s Chitragupt doesn’t wield a pen; he sets up a game. If Ayaan wins he gets a second chance at life. If he loses well... he’s not going back. What follows is a mix of guilt humour lessons and exaggerated moral drama. The idea? A modern take on mythology with a moral compass but with a light tone. Why did the audience not connect?Released in 2022 the film tried to be both funny and deep but didn’t quite land either. Viewers found the concept interesting but the execution underwhelming. Despite solid star power and high production value Thank God didn’t resonate with the masses or critics. Reviews were mixed with most calling it “confused” and “too preachy for a comedy.” How bad was the box office performance? The film was made on a whopping Rs 70 crore budget. However according to Sacnilk it earned just Rs 36.35 crore in India and Rs 48.99 crore globally. It failed to recover even its production cost earning the unfortunate title of a full-blown flop. Who all were in it?Apart from the lead trio Ajay Devgn Siddharth Malhotra and Rakul Preet Singh the film featured Mahesh Balraj Kanwaljit Singh Seema Pahwa Prateek Dixit and Kiku Sharda. Directed by Indra Kumar it aimed to be a fresh spin on morality plays. What went wrong? In theory a comic take on life death and karma with Ajay as a stylish god figure had potential. But it seems the storytelling didn’t strike the right chord. The preachy tone slow pace and lack of engaging humour made Thank God yet another reminder that even big names can’t guarantee box office success.
