Jasprit Bumrah Out Of Oval Test: Jasprit Bumrah will miss the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval, with the BCCI opting for caution over desperation in a series still alive at 2-1 in England’s favour.
IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah Out Of Oval Test
Bumrah, India’s most complete fast bowler and co-leading wicket-taker in the series with 14, has been advised by the BCCI medical team to sit out the Oval Test as part of a premeditated workload management plan. It’s a decision not entirely unexpected, Bumrah was never meant to play more than three of the five Tests, but one that still leaves a significant hole in India’s armoury heading into the series finale.
The decision, though pragmatic, underlines the fine line India are treading between ambition and preservation. Bumrah has bowled 139 overs in the series, including 33 at Old Trafford, his most in a single innings, where his pace dipped and his radar wavered. Only 0.5% of his deliveries in Manchester breached 140kph, a steep drop from Headingley’s 42.7%, reflecting not form but fatigue. His back, notoriously uncooperative in the past, has been spared one more trial.
With Bumrah out, Akash Deep is poised to return after recovering from a groin niggle that kept him out of the fourth Test. The Bengal seamer impressed in his comeback Test at Edgbaston with a ten-wicket haul, but was less incisive at Lord’s. At The Oval on Tuesday, however, he hit his straps in training, seaming the ball briskly off a lively surface.
Akash’s return will reconfigure a pace attack heavily reliant on Mohammed Siraj, the only Indian fast bowler to feature in all four Tests so far. Siraj has borne the burden manfully, bowling 139 overs at unrelenting intensity. With little depth on the bench, India are expected to stick with Siraj as spearhead, alongside Akash and either Prasidh Krishna or Arshdeep Singh, the latter back to full fitness after a hand injury.
The dilemma persists over whether to retain Shardul Thakur for his lower-order runs or to finally hand a game to Kuldeep Yadav, who continues to carry drinks despite the absence of a frontline wrist-spinner. India are expected to resist the temptation. The Oval pitch, green-streaked two days out, and the overcast forecast suggest more relevance for seam than spin, even if it leaves the side short of a second genuine wicket-taking spinner.
In the absence of Rishabh Pant, ruled out with injury, Dhruv Jurel will again keep wicket. That alone might persuade the selectors to resist experimentation and retain Thakur, whose batting can provide cushion against a long tail.
England, meanwhile, have added Craig Overton to their squad, with fitness questions still hanging over Mark Wood. The series, fierce, fluctuating and physically taxing, concludes at The Oval on Thursday. For India, it’s a chance to draw level; for Bumrah, it’s a reminder that in modern cricket, playing smart sometimes means not playing at all.
