The latest case has come out from Gandhinagar in Gujarat, where a prestigious female doctor was kept in a ‘digital arrest’ by cyber criminals for three months. During this, the doctor was cheated for Rs 19 crore.
Fraud started on 15 March
On March 15, the doctor received a call stating that objectionable material was found in his mobile. The caller called himself an official of a government agency and said that if the doctors do not cooperate, their number will be blocked and they will be stuck in serious cases like money laundering.
After this, the phone started coming one after the other. Some were calling themselves a sub-inspector, and some government lawyers. All the calling doctors continued to put mental pressure and kept on making money.
Crores of rupees were blown one by one
Due to continuous threats and pressure, the doctor transferred Rs 19 crore to 35 different bank accounts. Not only this, the fraudsters also took a loan on gold jewelery using their identity and cheated the money. The victim was monitored at all times through a video call and whenever she got out of the house, she was forced to tell her location.
Broken sleep when the calls stopped
Three months later, when the call suddenly stopped coming, the doctor suspected and informed his family. But unfortunately it was too late. On 16 July, the cybercrime unit of Gujarat CID registered a case on the doctor’s complaint.
According to the investigating officials, it can be considered as the biggest digital arrest fraud ever, in which such a huge amount was looted from the same person.
Suspect arrested, Rs 1 crore seized
The police have arrested a suspect from Surat, whose bank account has been found to be one crore rupees. He is being questioned so that the entire network can be exposed.
What is Digital Arrest Scam?
This is a dangerous cyber fraud in which criminals scare people by calling themselves officers of CBI, police, ED or cyber cell. The victim is kept under surveillance on video calls and cheated millions of rupees by showing fear of ‘digital arrest’.
