In the first innings of the Oval Test, Gill scored 21 runs and during this time he broke Gavaskar’s record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India as captain. During the 1978–79 Indo-West Indies Test series, Gavaskar played six matches as captain and scored 732 runs.
