
On the eve of Friendship Day 2025, acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali announced his latest production, side heroes, a comedy-drama that celebrates a lifetime friendship. The film, directed by Sanjay Tripathi and written by Siddharth Sen and Pankaj Matta, stars Abhishek Banerjee, Aparshakti Khurana and Varun Sharma in the lead roles, known for their comic roles in women and fukrey. Released on Friendship Day 2026, the film has been produced by Ali, Mahavir Jain, Mrigdeep Singh Lamba and Ryan Shah under Laika Productions, Mahavir Jain Films and Window Seats Films.
In a video shared by Mahavir Jain Films on Instagram, Ali discussed the project in a playful Bhojpuri accent, including the main trio. The story is of three childhood friends who meet again after years, and discover dreams, love and old memories through humor and heart. Producer Jain and Lamba described it as a “Hardik Screenplay”, which re -discovering joy, which will influence the audience of different generations.
Varun Sharma expressed enthusiasm in an Instagram post and described the side heroes as “a film made by friends, for friends”, which promises an emotional journey. Artists are expected to provide a comic chemistry – intensity of Banerjee, Khurana’s attraction and Sharma’s humor – a laughing experience. The fans on X also expressed enthusiasm in the hope of a relevant story of friendship.
