
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren died on Monday. He was 81. The development was confirmed by his son, Hemant Soren, the present Chief Minister of Jharkhand, via an X post.
On August 2, it was reported that Shibu Soren was on a ventilator support in a critical condition.
He had been admitted to the Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in the national capital for over a month with a kidney-related issue.
“Respected Guru Dishom has left us all. Today, I have become empty…" (sic), Hemant Soren wrote on X.
In a medical bulletin, Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital stated, “Shibu Soren was declared dead at 8.56 am today."
“He died after a prolonged illness. He was suffering from a kidney ailment and had suffered a stroke, a month and a half back," the bulletin read.
“He was on the life support system for the last one month," the hospital stated.
Later, a press release by the hospital mentioned, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the demise of Mr. Shibu Soren, Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, who was under treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi since 19th June 2025 under the care of Dr. AK Bhalla, Senior Consultant, Nephrology."
Despite the best efforts of our multidisciplinary medical team, Mr. Shibu Soren, 81 yrs passed away peacefully on 4th August, 202,5, with his family at the bedside.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, his loved ones and the people of Jharkhand in this moment of grief and loss of a very popular mass leader.
Earlier, on June 24, Hemant Soren had said Shibu Soren had been receiving regular treatment at the hospital for an extended period.
“He was admitted here recently, so we came to see him. His health issues are currently being examined," Hemant Soren had said.
Shibu Soren had been the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha for the past 38 years and was recognised as the party’s founding patron.
On July 15, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal had met Hemant Soren at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and enquired about the health of his ailing father.
In a post on X, the former Delhi Chief Minister expressed his concern and wished Shibu Soren a speedy recovery.
“Today, I visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi and met with Jharkhand Chief Minister and friend Hemant Soren to enquire about the well-being of his father and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren. I pray to God that he recovers quickly and returns home soon," Kejriwal wrote.
On June 26, President Droupadi Murmu visited Shibu Soren at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
