Kreo’s ‘How India Games’ survey reveals gaming is not just for kids

New Delhi: Consumer electronics brand Kreo that makes gear for gamers has conducted a ‘How India Games’ survey to investigate the identities, habits and aspirations of over 5,900 gamers across the country. The survey reveals that while most parents are ambivalent towards gaming, or consider it a waste of time, over 35 per cent of gamers are entrepreneurs, techies and creators, dispelling the myth that gaming is only for students. The annual growth of the gaming population in the country is pegged at 16 per cent. Men dominate the scene making up 94 per cent of gamers, but women are catching up after the age of 35. 75 per cent of female gamers hide their gender online.

A staggering 53 per cent of gamers are interested in creating their own content, with many streaming or coding as well. 88 per cent of gamers use smartphones, mostly in tandem with other devices. The device distribution is a bit complex, with most gamers juggling at least two devices, with a laptop and smartphone being the most common combination. However, 17.8 per cent of the gamers game exclusively on PC, which is higher than either smartphones or laptops. 46 per cent of all games are pirated, with even those buying games also playing cracked versions.

Co-founder and CEO of Kreo, Ishan Sukul says, “Gaming was an escape for me when I was young. Evaluating the results of this report, it seems an even more prevalent option to solve loneliness in India. Today, gaming is an even more defining part of how 300M+ Indians connect, create, and express themselves. With How India Games, we wanted to go beyond numbers to understand what gaming really means to people, how its solving cultural issues, including depression.”
