The Union Ministry of Energy, headed by Manohar Lal Khattar, has notified the new compulsory energy consumption standards for the domestic LPG stove on Tuesday, which will be effective from January 1, 2026. This order issued under the Energy Protection Act, 2001 is part of the ongoing efforts to improve domestic energy efficiency. It has been published in the government gazette.

Orders have been issued with the advice of BEE
The notification states that all domestic LPG stoves used in India, even if they are imported, all will have to follow the thermal efficiency standards defined in the Indian Standards (IS) 4246. These orders have been issued with the advice of the Energy Efficiency Bureau (BEE) and star labeling on the chickens has been made mandatory to show the thermal efficiency.

What standard were set in the rating chart?
The new labeling scheme includes a star rating of 1 to 5 stars based on the thermal efficiency of the LPG stove. The following standards are set in the rating chart – the efficiency of a stove with 1 star should be ≥68% and <70%; Efficiency of 2 star stove: ≥70% and <72%; 3 star efficiency: ≥72% and <74%; Efficiency of 4 Star: ≥74% and <76% and 5 star stove efficiency: ≥76%.

How long is the labeling period valid
The notification states that every tool will showcase the star rating through an official label, so that customers can easily compare the energy performance of various stove models. The labeling period will be valid from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028, after which it will be reviewed every two years or before if required.

According to a report, it is mandatory for all manufacturers and importers of LPG stove to register through BEE online standards and labeling portals. Only those stoves that run only on LPG (not on any other gas type) and who have valid BIS certification will be eligible for labeling.
