On Thursday, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service in India caused a wide technical obstacle, causing millions of consumers across the country to face problems in digital transactions. This is the fourth time in the year 2025 when the UPI network is down.

Users upset due to transaction failure

This problem also affected the UPI transactions of major banks of the country like HDFC Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda and Kotak Mahindra Bank. The problem of failing transaction was seen especially on major digital payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm.

Complaints of UPI Down started coming on social media from around 7:45 pm. By 8 pm on a website called Dowditector, more than 2,100 users lodged a complaint, out of which about 80% of the complaints were to payment failure. 628 million transactions took place every day in July

However, this technology in UPI is surprising, because its popularity in India is constantly increasing. According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), in July 2025, there was a transaction of about Rs 25.08 lakh crore through UPI. In May 2025, this figure reached Rs 25.14 lakh crore. On an average in July, 628 million transactions took place every day, whose total value was around Rs 80,919 crore.

In June 2025, a total of 18.4 billion transactions were done through UPI and more than Rs 24 lakh crore was paid.
