Election Commission's Statement on Voter List
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Thursday that no political party has submitted any claims or objections regarding the draft voter list in Bihar. The commission emphasized that the final voter list will neither exclude any eligible voter nor include any ineligible ones. On August 1, the commission had invited claims and objections to rectify any errors in the draft voter list published for Bihar.
Claims and Objections Received
In a daily bulletin concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, the Election Commission reported that it has received 5,015 claims and objections directly from voters regarding the draft list. Additionally, forms from new voters aged 18 and above total 27,517. According to regulations, the claims and objections will be addressed by the respective Electoral Registration Officer/Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (ERO/AERO) after a period of seven days.
Political Controversy Surrounding Voter List Revision
As per the orders related to SIR, no name can be removed from the draft list published on August 1 without a clear directive from the ERO/AERO after proper verification and fair opportunity. The SIR process in Bihar has sparked political controversy, with the opposition coalition, India Block, alleging that this revision could lead to the removal of a significant number of voters' names. They have been protesting in Parliament since the start of this year's monsoon session, demanding discussions on the Bihar SIR.
Supreme Court's Directive to Election Commission
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court instructed the Election Commission on Wednesday to respond by August 9 to a new petition from a non-governmental organization (NGO) requesting the disclosure of data regarding 6.5 million voters not included in the draft voter list following the SIR campaign. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the NGO, highlighted in the Supreme Court that there has been no specific information provided about who has passed away or who has permanently migrated.
