The film Sholay directed by Ramesh Sippy has become a legendary masterpiece in Indian cinema. It will complete 50 years on August 15 2025. Even today people fondly recall and quote its iconic dialogues and songs. Released in 1975 Sholay featured a star-studded cast whose collective performances played a vital role in making the film a blockbuster. The cast included Amitabh Bachchan (Jai) Dharmendra (Veeru) Hema Malini (Basanti) Amjad Khan (Gabbar Singh) Sanjeev Kumar (Thakur) and Jaya Bachchan (Radha). How much did Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan earn for Sholay? In Sholay Hema Malini played the role of Basanti while Dharmendra portrayed Veeru. According to media reports Hema Malini was paid Rs 75000 for her role whereas Dharmendra received Rs 150000. It is believed that Dharmendra was the highest-paid actor in the film as he was the only established superstar in the cast at that time. Amitabh Bachchan who played the role of Jai was the second lead in the film Sholay. According to media reports he was paid Rs 100000 for the role which was less than what Sanjeev Kumar received for portraying Thakur. Sanjeev Kumar was reportedly paid Rs 125000 while Amjad Khan who played the iconic villain Gabbar Singh was offered Rs 50000. You’ll be shocked to know that Jaya Bachchan was the least paid among the main cast of Sholay. For her role as Radha she was reportedly offered only Rs 35000. The film also featured Asrani who played the comical British-style jailor. Although his role was brief it became one of the most memorable parts of the film. According to reports he was paid Rs 15000 for the role.
