In his book Rekha: The Untold Story Prakash Mehra wrote that the entire incident took place on his set at Natraj Studio. There was a heated argument between Amitabh and Rekha and she even broke down in tears. He recalled asking her to stay calm adding that the whole drama unfolded because of Nelly. The matter escalated so much that it was written in the famous Stardust magazine that a scuffle broke out and Amitabh allegedly slapped Rekha. However there is no official information about whether this is true or false. Different media reports claim that the whole incident made Rekha so upset that she even wanted to leave Silsila when she got to know about her sharing the screen with Amitabh and returned her signing amount to Yash Chopra. After this Yash decided to cast Padmini Kolhapure and Poonam Dhillon for the role of the wife. But Yash did not understand this casting. After this Yash thought of choosing Parveen Babi as Rekhas replacement and Smita Patil for the role of his wife but finally Yash convinced Rekha and the final cast was Amitabh Rekha and Jaya and the film became a cult classic.
