Significant Wildlife Smuggling Operation Disrupted
Keonjhar: In a significant operation, the Keonjhar Forest Division in Odisha has seized four elephant tusks weighing more than 5 kg and apprehended five individuals suspected of smuggling wildlife parts, according to officials.
The operation was initiated following intelligence from the Similipal Wildlife Intelligence Network, leading to the formation of a specialized team on Thursday.
At approximately 10 AM, the team conducted a raid at a residence in Balibeda village, where they discovered the five suspects in possession of the tusks, resulting in their arrest, a forest department representative stated.
Upon questioning, the suspects could not provide any legal documentation for the tusks, further confirming the illicit nature of their actions.
All individuals arrested are residents of the Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
In addition to the tusks, authorities also confiscated four mobile phones and two motorcycles during the operation.
A case has been filed under various provisions of The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, as amended in 2022.
The market value of ivory is reported to range from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh per kilogram, according to another official.
