Desk: The entire population of Tuvalu, an island country in the Pacific Ocean, is having to migrate to Australia. This will be the first time that the entire population of a country is migrating in a planned manner. Tuvalu is on the verge of submergence due to rising sea levels, so people are having to migrate to save their lives. In such a situation, Tuvalu has signed an agreement with Australia, under which the people of Tuvalu will be able to settle in Australia.
In 2023, the Phelepi Union Treaty was signed between Tuvalu and Australia, under which the Climate Migration Program is being created. Under this, every year 280 citizens of Tuvalu will be made permanent citizens of Australia. Along with this, they will also get facilities like health care, education, house and job. Its first phase has been completed between 16 June and 18 July. The Australian High Commission in Tuvalu said that people are showing a lot of interest and so far 8,750 registrations have been done.
Tuvalu is a small island country in the Pacific Ocean, which consists of nine coral islands and atolls. Atolls are ring-shaped islands. This country is at a height of only 16 feet above the sea, due to which there is a risk of floods and sea storm waves due to climate change and it is highly sensitive to the sea. The population here is just a little more than 11 thousand.
Tuvalu is one of the most climate-prone places on Earth. Scientists have expressed concern that the country will become completely uninhabited in the next 80 years. According to reports, two of its nine coral atolls have been submerged. Tuvalu’s Prime Minister Feleti Tio has urged countries around the world to pay attention to the country’s situation and has also called for a new international treaty to protect the rights of countries facing rising sea levels.
NASA’s Sea Level Change Team has also drawn some conclusions about Tuvalu and they say that in the year 2023, the water level here will be 15 centimeters higher than in the last 30 years. If the sea level continues to rise at this rate, then by 2050 the entire land here will be submerged in water and the sea will also engulf all the infrastructure.
