The central government has heard another great news for the common people. The Union Cabinet has approved Rs 12,060 crore, under which more than 10 crore families of the country will now be able to buy domestic LPG (LPG) cylinders at Rs 300 cheap prices. This news is especially relieved for families who were troubled by rising LPG prices.

Large relief will be available under Ujjwala scheme

This announcement is no less than a gift for the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Under this scheme, in Delhi, where the common consumer gets a LPG cylinder of 14.2 kg for Rs 853, Ujjwala beneficiaries will get this cylinder with a subsidy of Rs 300 for just Rs 553. However, there may be a slight difference in its price in different states.

Subsidy will be available 9 times a year

The Prime Minister Ujjwala scheme started in May 2016 has completed 9 years. Under this scheme, the beneficiaries will get a subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder on a maximum of 9 times a year. Not only this, subsidy will be given in the same proportion for 5 kg of small cylinders. The government aims to get cheap and clean energy to low-income families, so that prices fluctuations in the international market do not affect them.

Oil companies will also get help

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the government has sanctioned financial assistance of Rs 30,000 crore to three major oil marketing companies – Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited to keep LPG supply cheaper. This help is being provided in view of the current Bhurajnical conditions and the uncertainty of the oil-gas field. This amount will be given in 12 installments through the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Why was this help necessary?

The government made it clear that the international prices of LPG remain very high in 2024-25. If this burden was put directly to consumers, the gas cylinder prices could have increased further. But the oil companies continued to supply gas at cheaper rates, causing them to suffer heavy losses. Now efforts will be made to balance the situation of companies with this financial assistance.

Rural families will get big benefit

This decision will prove to be a boon, especially for rural and economically weaker families. Cheap LPG cylinders will not only reduce the cost of their kitchen, but will also make the access to clean energy easier. With this step, the government has once again proved that it is giving priority to the needs of common people.
